Verdean Clyde Smith, 87, of Hagerstown MD, passed away, Tuesday, March 2, 2010, at the Julia Manor Health Care Center, Hagerstown.

Born Thursday, December 14, 1922, in Smithsburg, Maryland, he was the son of the late Roy B. Smith, Jr. and the late Rosa Irene Lewis Smith. His wife, Lillian Marie Smith preceded him in death in 2004.

He was employed with the Western Maryland Railroad retiring after 37 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the South Pacific with the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Clear Spring American Legion.

He is survived by his daughter, Susan M. Harbaugh of Hagerstown, MD; four sisters, Lorraine Bakner of Quincy, PA, Pauline Shank of Hagerstown, MD, Betty Warner of Hagerstown, MD, Marjorie Mullenix of Greencastle, PA; brother, Calvin B. Smith of Ashville, NC; and numerous nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Kenneth C., Frank D. and Roy B. Smith, Jr.

Services will be held Monday, March 8, 2010 at 11:00 AM, at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North Hagerstown, MD, with the Rev. Richard Daughtridge officiating.

Family will receive friends from 10:30 AM to 11:00 AM at the funeral home, Monday, March 8.

Interment will follow at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown, MD.
