Martin "Harold" "Hal" Carey, 87, of Hagerstown, Maryland died Monday, February 22, 2010.
Born on May 3, 1922 in Noblesville, Indiana, he was the son of the late Martin Harold Carey, Sr. and Ruth Anna (Hunt) Carey.
Harold graduated from Cambridge City High School, Cambridge City, Indiana in 1940 prior to moving to Hagerstown, Maryland.
He was a U. S. Army veteran, serving in Saipan in World War II.
He was employed by Staton Furniture before serving in the military. After World War II he worked at Brandt's Furniture and as an engineer at Pangborn. He was a manager for Thom McAn shoe stores in Frederick and Hagerstown, Maryland for many years. He was the owner/operator of three Tastee Freez restaurants in Greencastle, Chambersburg and Boonsboro until his retirement.
Harold was a sportsman, playing basketball with the Cabineers ball team with his brother Bob. He enjoyed swimming, tennis, golf and was an avid snow skier until age 72.
He was a long-time member of First Christian Church, serving as a deacon, member of the Finance Committee, and chairman of the Property Committee for many years.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Velma Jean (Clifton Funkhouser) Carey; two daughters, Donna Carey of Hagerstown and Diann Smith and husband Dennis Smith of Boonsboro; three grandsons, John Smith of Ft. Riley, Kansas, Lee Smith of California and Robert Smith of Hagerstown; one great granddaughter, Emmy Smith of Kansas; two great grandsons, Elijah Smith and Gabriel Smith of Kansas; one step-daughter Sonnie (Clifton) Brown and husband George Brown of Richmond, Indiana; one step-son Jan Clifton of North Carolina; one step-grandson, Doug Owens and wife Brooke Owens of Richmond, Indiana; one step-great granddaughter Sydney Owens of Indiana; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he also was preceded in death by his first wife, Lorraine Elizabeth (Hamburg) Carey in 1984; one sister, Virginia (Carey) Hockett and one brother, Robert Carey.
A memorial service will be held at First Christian Church, 1345 Potomac Ave., Hagerstown, Maryland on Saturday, February 27, 2010, at 11:00 am with the Rev. Dr. Timothy Murtaugh and the Rev. Nancy Jenkins officiating.
A time of visitation and fellowship will follow the memorial service in the church's Fellowship Hall.
Inurnment will be private at the convenience of the family.
