William Vance Roney, 84, of Hagerstown MD, passed away Saturday, February 20, 2010, at his home surrounded by his family.

 

Born Saturday, April 4, 1925, in Hagerstown, Maryland, he was the son of

the late Ray Victor Roney and the late, Catharine Schnebley Vance Roney.

 

He attended Hagerstown High School and graduated from Mercersburg

Academy in 1943. While attending Mercersburg Academy he was

drafted and commissioned to the US Navy and stationed in Vero Beach

Naval Air Station in Florida. During WWII, he was deployed overseas

aboard the USS Estes Flag Ship of the 7th Fleet and received an

honorable discharge in 1946. After serving his country, he returned

home to complete his education and attended Washington & Jefferson

College and graduated in 1950 from Strayer College with a degree in

Business Administration.

 

He began his working career in 1950 with Hagerstown Trust Company and

after 36 years, retired in 1986 as Senior Vice President and Director of

Marketing.

 

He was a Charter Member of the Suburban Kiwanis Club of Hagerstown where

he served many positions during his 51 years. His service included

positions of President and Lt. Governor of the 9th Division, Capital

District. He was a lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church and

served several terms on the Church Council, taught Sunday School, served

on the Finance and Audit Committees and was an usher. He was very

active in his community and served as Chair of Group II and past

President of the Maryland Bankers Association, Economic Development

Commission, was the Scout Master for Boy Scout Troup #9, United Way

Campaign volunteer and served as a Board Member for the Commission on

Aging, Family Service Agency and the Maryland Symphony Orchestra.

 

During his retirement he enjoyed making colonial-style furniture,

traveling the world, fishing, golfing and was an avid Terrapins fan.

One of his greatest pleasures in life was enjoying family and friends at

special occasions and holidays. He treasured his lifelong friendships

and took great pleasure in their company, especially 'The Card Club'.

 

He is survived by his wife, Betty J. Roney; two daughters, JoAnne Lease & husband, Victor, Sr. of Cumberland, MD, and Julia Williams & husband,

Randall of Hagerstown, MD; son, John Henry Roney II & wife, Sue of

Hagerstown, MD; brother, John Richard Roney & wife, Lucille of Hagerstown, MD; six grandchildren, Aaron Matthew Glosser & wife, Christina of Weirton, WV, Nathanael Roney & wife, Kimberly of Asheville, NC, William Vance Roney &

Fiance', Brittany Lebling of Dallas, TX, Katie Conder of Hagerstown, MD,

Alexandra Koch of Hagerstown, MD, and Jonathan Koch of Hagerstown, MD; three great-grandchildren, Brianna Rose Glosser, Gabriel Conder, Cameron Conder.

 

He was preceded in death by granddaughter, Samantha Jennifer Bittner.

 

Services will be held Thursday, February 25, 2010, at 10:30 AM, from

St. John's Lutheran Church, 141 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown, MD, with

Rev. Edward Heim officiating. Interment will follow at the Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown, Maryland 21740.

Family will receive friends at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, MD from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM Wednesday February 24, 2010.

Memorial donations may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church.
