Jeannette Kaylor Byler Rutledge passed away February 12, 2010. She was the daughter of the late Harry Wesley Kaylor and Lula Eakle Kaylor. She was born April 22, 1913.
She was a graduate from St. Hilda's Hall, Charlestown, WV and attended Hood College and the University of Maryland from which she received a Bachelor's degree in dietetics and a Masters degree of Education in Guidance.
She also did post-graduate work at Penn State, Western Maryland College and the University of Maryland.
She was a Medical Proof Reader at Pryors Medical Publishing Company and worked at the Bureau of Aeronautics in Washington, D.C. She taught in the schools of Washington County and was a Guidance Councelor at Williamsport Junior and Senior High School and North Hagerstown High School.
She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and was on the church council and taught Sunday School for over fifty years. She was co-author of the 200th year History of St. John's Lutheran Church. She attempted to get the Ten Commandments at the court house.
She was a girl scout leader. She was on the board of the Community Action Council, the Girl's Club, The Hagerstown Day Nursery and King's Daughter's Charity. She was a Regent of the Conococheague Daughters of the American Revolution. She was the State Membership chairman for the State of Maryland Guidance Councelors. She was a delegate to the White House Conference on Children and Youth. She did volunteer work for various projects and charities.
She was a charter member of the Washington County American Association of University Women. She was a member of the PEO Sisterhood, Kappa Delta Sorority, Aglow, Hood College Club, Arts and Letters Club, Current Events Club, Fountain Head Garden Club, The Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, The Retired Teachers Association, The Washington County Historical Society, The American Legion Auxiliary, Retired Counselors and Fountain Head Country Club for years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, The Honorable Irvine Hart Rutledge in 1997; two sisters, Laura Belle Kaylor Cox of Loveland, CO and Helen Kaylor Bowie of Baltimore, MD; and a brother, William Harold Kaylor who died in infancy.
She is survived by two daughters, Jane Byler Stroot of Kensington, MD and Ann Byler Boone of Columbia, MD; two step children, Henry Middleton Rutledge and Eleanor Rutledge Lesher; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Family will receive friends at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, MD 21742, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, Friday, February 19, 2010.
Services will be held at the funeral home at 11:00AM on Saturday, February 20, 2010, with the Rev. Edward Heim and the Rev. Jeffrey L. Shull officiating.
