 Barbara Jean Freshman Sweeney, 82, of Taylorsville, and formerly of Martinsburg, West Virginia, passed away on October 9, 2017 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care, Hudson, NC.

 Born in Thurmont, Maryland on October 28, 1934, she was the daughter of the late, Burnell Ralph (Cupie) and Regina Fidelis (Jean) Kelly Freshman.

 Barbara was a member of the Class of 1952 of Thurmont High School. During her time at Thurmont High she was Class President, secretary of the library club, editor of the school paper, member of the glee club, and a member of the student council and intermural sports teams.

 She graduated from St. Joseph’s College in Emmitsburg, MD in 1956. She began her teaching career in Maryland in the late 1950’s teaching English and Social Studies. William and Barbara moved to Martinsburg, WV in the late 60’s to settle and raise a family. She was a teacher at St. Joseph’s School for over 25 years until her retirement. After retirement, she was a librarian at the Martinsburg Berkeley County Library for over 7 years.

 On December 28, 1957, Barbara married William Lewis Sweeney and they were happily together for fifty years until his passing on December 30, 2007. In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Elizabeth Sweeney Benner on July 6, 2003.

 Barbara is survived by her son Stephen G. Sweeney and daughter-in-law, Melissa of Taylorsville; three granddaughters, Kelly Benner Rowe, Cassie Benner, and Rachel Benner; a step grandson, Anthony Lail; a brother, Larry K. Freshman and wife, Lorelei of Thurmont, MD; and several nieces and nephews.

 Graveside services will be held Friday, October 13, 2017 at 3:00 pm at Blue Ridge Cemetery in Thurmont, MD with the Rev. Laura Robeson officiating.

 In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, at www.komenmd.org  

 Arrangements have been entrusted to the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, MD.
